Have you ever wondered how your smartphone works, how a light bulb turns on, or how your computer processes information? The answer lies in the fascinating world of electronics and circuits.

What is an Electric Circuit?

An electric circuit is a closed path that allows electric current to flow. The basic components include:

  • Voltage Source (battery or power supply)
  • Conductors (wires)
  • Load (resistor, bulb, motor)
  • Switch (to control the circuit)

Ohm's Law

The relationship between voltage (\(V\)), current (\(I\)), and resistance (\(R\)) is given by Ohm's Law:

$$V = IR$$

This is the fundamental equation of circuit analysis. For a circuit with multiple resistors, the equivalent resistance depends on the configuration.

Resistors in Series

$$R_{\text{eq}} = R_1 + R_2 + R_3 + \dots + R_n$$

Resistors in Parallel

$$\frac{1}{R_{\text{eq}}} = \frac{1}{R_1} + \frac{1}{R_2} + \frac{1}{R_3} + \dots + \frac{1}{R_n}$$

Kirchhoff's Laws

Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL)

The sum of currents entering a junction equals the sum of currents leaving:

$$\sum I_{\text{in}} = \sum I_{\text{out}}$$

Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL)

The sum of voltage drops around a closed loop equals zero:

$$\sum V = 0$$

Power in Circuits

The power dissipated by a component is:

$$P = VI = I^2R = \frac{V^2}{R}$$

Capacitors and Inductors

Capacitors store energy in an electric field:

$$Q = CV$$

Inductors store energy in a magnetic field:

$$V = L\frac{dI}{dt}$$

Conclusion

Understanding these basics opens the door to designing and analyzing electronic systems of all kinds.
